Funeral for Edmonton-based soldier scheduled for Saturday

EDMONTON - The military funeral for an Edmonton-based soldier killed in Afghanistan last month has been scheduled for Saturday in Saskatoon.

Lt. Justin Garrett Boyes was killed on Oct. 28 by a homemade bomb while on a foot patrol near Kandahar.

The 26-year-old from the Edmonton-based 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was just 10 days into his second tour in Afghanistan. He was the 132nd Canadian soldier to die in the conflict.

Boyes grew up in Saskatoon but lived in Edmonton with his wife Alanna and three-year-old son James.

He was attached to the Police Operational Mentor and Liaison Team and was assigned as a platoon leader at Canada's provincial reconstruction team base in Kandahar city.

The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. at Circle Drive Alliance Church, 3035 Preston Avenue South in Saskatoon.
