A film industry veteran with extensive experience in marketing, fundraising and government relations has been appointed Victoria's new film commissioner, the board of the Greater Victoria Film Commission announced late Tuesday.

Jo Anne Walton, former western Canada marketing manager for the National Film Board of Canada and director of film for Vancouver's IDERA Films, was selected from a list of candidates from across Canada during a lengthy and extensive search.

Walton has also participated in commissioning of NFB new media, children's and documentary programs.

"She has a broad perspective on the creative approaches needed to sustain GVFC operations while building a viable film industry in the Greater Victoria region," GVFC president Laura Benson said in a news release.

Walton replaces Rod Hardy, a seasoned locations manager who held the position for the past three years. Hardy has returned to the film and television industry and formed his own production company since leaving the post three months ago.

"I'm looking forward to working with my networks and the local industry to promote Greater Victoria's spectacular film potential," said Walton, who assumes her duties Jan. 4. The not-for-profit commission is operating with an interim staff.
